about

Central to Purlieu is inspired by the friends and associates, the suburbs and streets, and the parks and gardens of Manchester in the late eighties and nineties, before all the really tall buildings went up.

It’s not especially intended to be sentimental, nostalgic or psycho-geographical, however it is a deliberate endeavour to blend melodic and harmonic layers of guitars, with organs and tape echo in an enchanting semi-compositional form, that in some small subjective manner is evocative of that era.

This album progresses on from Pete Philipson’s two previous spatial echo guitar albums – Peaks (2014) and Linotopia (2018) – and this being the final album in the series. Where Peaks was all improvised in a single performance recorded overnight in a church, and Linotopia was focussed on rhythmic sound design, Central to Purlieu is mostly based around melodic themes and repetition.

As on the earlier albums key musical influences are found in the music of Vini Reilly, Manuel Göttsching, Conny Veit, Sarah Lipstrate, James Blackshaw, and Arvo Pärt.

Reviews of Previous Albums

DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY: "Glistening, chirruping electronics, plaintive Durutti Column-referencing ruminations and soothing Labradford-meets-Rothko minimalism. A distinctively austere yet humane collection."

TONESHIFT: "A sensitive grace and maximum impact."

SOUNDBLAB: "A reverberating, hypnotic style that lends itself well to concentration or meditation."
