about

Textiles is the result of experiments with converting written political messaging to audio form and associated linguistic and sonic distortions. Text from the websites of the two main political parties in both the UK and the USA were chosen for the process, thus taking purposefully clear PR campaigns and rendering them anything but. The results from these experiments have been shaped to form four tracks on this album.
The first track explores semantic association (with the help of the YouTube search algorithm) and finely slicing audio by transient; the second uses phonics and the sounds of typing the text at hand on various keypads, the third uses a free online text-to-speech generator (text2speech.org) and explores digital time-stretching and -compression, and finally, the last track utilises unusual recording methods and environments in a slowly shifting soundscape.

David Curington is a composer, visual artist and improvising oboist based in Hadfield, UK with interests in density, texture, noise, waste, commercialism, collage, the everyday, the absurd and their manifestations in the internet age.
He is the founder of Square Ears records and, to date, his music has been released on both his own label, Difficult Art and Music and Anticipating Nowhere and aired on Freeness on BBC Radio 3. As an improviser, he is interested in reconceptualising the oboe as a noise instrument and has performed both at Square Ears label nights and the Curious Ear series in Manchester.
David holds a PhD in composition from the Royal Northern College of Music and is a former winner of the RPS Composition Prize.
