 Free time, oh free time
 Nothing spent from nothing

I'm gonna follow the liquid
Watch myself being led away from myself
Down some ancient stairway
Under everything
Watch myself being eaten by the distance
'Hahaha,' bellows the joker
'No, no, no,' replies the victim

Sometimes you lose someone
Love comes undone When you hide behind
No one left inside

Sometimes you are someone
Mama came undone
When she lost her son
No one left, left to love
8.
It’s hard It's hard to know
These things out there
It’s hard to watch
You, himself and god

It’s hard

It's easy
Die-a-beat-us-up
Be strong, knots loose
It's easy pre-fall
 Gods god-self, the fall

It's easy
9.
Out here
in the scorching desert
the heat gets to your head
without water way out here
without water
blood gets thick, eyes get red

sand once so soft
like a bed of grass
not any longer
now a rough rock eats into my back

the only
break in the scorching blue sky
is a lone vulture
some friend, the vulture
it circles
vulture it says:
 'Welcome, to heaven'
10.
Never again Will I love you
11.
To be a man
It's quite a task
To be a man
Be a man

The city cajole It's all lit up beneath An apartment rooftop It's an uphill drop To be a man You have to jump Fall into the arms Of the Earth As it rushes to meet you Headfirst What could be worse than To be a man? To be a man Could use a hand To be a man It's quite a task To be a man Be a man

Greenville’s very own Zachary Lansdowne He was brought down in Noble County On the morning of September 3rd, 1925 Down came the Daughter of the Stars USS Shenandoah Ohio became a thermal updraft 1,000-plus feet per minute The Empress of the Clouds split apart The control car lost control in the merciless sky USS Shenandoah All for publicity Midwestern politicians sacrificed the crew Zachary tried to postpone it But Eberle and Moffat preferred profit USS Shenandoah 40 cities and towns were not enough To satisfy our political interests Lansdowne was among the 14 killed Politics is the line-squall that did it USS Shenandoah

All these Christmas lights Twinkle dimly in the snowy white And the mist of our breath are all that’s left Of the sadness that these lights embody Christmas lights Shine so bright All these Christmas lights Let me feel you’re here tonight And the cold snowflakes are all that’s left Of the girl that these lights embody Christmas lights Shine so bright

about

Re-listening to all of the songs that make up this album, I'd hazard to guess that it's about growing up and all the losses and gains that are part of aging. "Guess" because these songs span such a long stretch of time (2014 - 2022) and also because it wasn't until very recently that the prospect of throwing them all together into an album presented itself. However, some common themes do miraculously emerge and my best guess in as few words as possible is that this is "growing up". I suppose that can mean many things but as far as I can tell it comes closer to it than anything else.

Integrating excerpts of dialogue from old black and white films or monologue-advertisements into these songs significantly guided the meaning in new and surprising ways. Experimenting around with old audio from a near, yet distant, era and seeing how it affected the music was exciting in the moment and very satisfying once the piece of audio that was exactly what was needed found its place.

The cover image was taken during the raging fires and heat waves of 2021 in British Columbia, and it was taken in the early afternoon but because of how thick the smoke was it looked like dusk. For some unknown reason, to me, this photo feels like it exudes the essence of these songs...

"A weird folk fondue of shattered dreams and brittle recollections. An unbridled and bizarre sound world full of harrowing and dissonant ditties. Cathartic and stinging." ~ Simon (theclutchandtheflywheel)
